Goodbye, Singa the Lion
ON THE coffin was a single red rose, while a small crowd gathered to mourn the “death” of Singa the Lion, Singapore’s long-time symbol of courtesy.
.
Mr V Kumar gave a eulogy, mourning the deathof kindness in Singapore and called on Singaporeans to remember Singa and celebrate what he stood for.
.
Together with two friends, the 21-year-old put together the “wake” over two weeks. It was meant to jolt Singaporeans into being more active in creating a gracious society. “We already have had years of Government campaigns to promote kindness ... we felt what was really needed was a bottom-up initiative because people are desensitised to official campaigns,” said Mr Kumar, a first year at Singapore Management University (SMU).
.
If anyone disagreed that kindness is dead, hopefully they would take action to show otherwise. “It’s the little things that count,” said co-organiser Mr Wong, also from SMU. LIN YANQIN
What do you mean singa is dead? I just saw him a couple of days ago! If they are referring to the death of courtesy in singapore, they are wrong too. How can something that was never alive, die? Courtesy was never present locally what!
Here's our attempt to snuff out the lion.
