hello citrus jello

Jelly = water + gelatin

Just gave it a shot. And here it is:

Before

hello lemon, this is gelatine. you don't wanna know where he came from
(derived from the collagen inside animals' skin and bones)

after

boing boing!

Think I overdid it with the gelatin. Was it supposed to be so cloudy? Anyway eating gelatin is good ain't it?

tapas

tuna comes with eucalyptus and pomegranate, steak tartar is served with mustard ice cream and a suckling pig arrives nestled over a bed of Spanish-style sauerkraut and mustard

arghhh fond memories...

Kinda reminds me of the not-anytime-soon dinner I had earlier this year.

my fave raw fish

i'd give it points for the looks

Speaking of tapas, I was reminded of one thing: housewarming party. I was never a in-da-scene kinda guy and I don't have friends like that. I don't throw parties (why must throw? can't we just give?) nor do I go to them. But I've always wanted to throw a nice party and I guess the housewarming's it.

Those who know me knows that I am not the kind who just order buffet and get it over with. What should my party be like in terms of food and theme?

As budget is definitely a constraint and asking for a potluck is cheapo AND you end up with lotsa potato chips, sushi and red wine.

A cheap way is a popiah party. Who don't like popiah? Who?!

who can dislike me? I mean... look at me!

Qiji(green stands for Halal yo!) knows it well and look what happened? I remember years ago, Qiji was this small stall in Plaza Singapore's foodcourt selling popiah. In a few short years, it sprang everywhere. A real Qiji indeed.

As for the theme of the party, another post for another time...

muesli bar

To save on food while abroad, shuyi brings instant noodles to cook. No more. How bout something more healthy instead?

I decided to make her some healthy muesli bars. Portable, no cooking required. Packed with vitamins and fiber. It got so much butter and hunny in there, it tastes great too!

muesli + unprocessed barn + butter + honey + leftover cereal

after baking

packed to go!

MacKopi

The time is now. When bad times comes, Ronald MacDonald and his homies laugh all the way to the bank. Now there is a new frountier that the golden arches want to conquer...

Goumet coffee. At cheaper prices and reasonable quality, MacKopi is really making waves. While we see StarBucks closing down, we are getting more and more MacCafes popping up everywhere.

our is USD 3. not that dumb.

I don't know about the USA. But the so called baristas they employ in our local starbucks is a joke. If you go to Italy, you can see that they are serious about their coffee. Even the smallest cafe there would come with a proper espresso machine and a serious looking barista behind it.

Even though I have been drinking arabica coffee at home since I was a fetus, I am no expert in coffee. But from what I heard about those serious coffee addicts, starbucks sells you seriously shitty coffee. I would agree. The local market is full of coffee drinkers who cannot really differentiate between average and bad coffee. Just get an espresso machine and make your own latte. 50cents a cup as opposed to $5.

hors d'oeuvres?

hors· d'oeuvre (pronounced or-DURV):
A small portion of a tasty food served as an appetizer before a meal or as at a cocktail party

In this case, is a thrown together mix of all the leftovers at home. Shaved ham, mozzarella cheese, sour cream, onion, tomato, Parmesan cheese and baked beans.

butter/lemon rice

Success! After watching all the cooking shows, if there is something you need to learn about cooking, here it is: basics + creativity + courage.

Let's see TV people who have influenced us in cooking...

方太: singlehandedly taught every auntie home cooked food. my mom used to write down her reciepes and keep them together with the newspaper cutouts. She taught the world the use-chopstick-to-see-if-the-oil-is-hot-enough trick.

check out my fro yo

Yan: Can cook but he can also make himself a god damn clown. disgrace to asians around the world. almost singlehandedly created the chinese sterotype. baaad engrish.

ching ching chong!
wanna see me juggle 3 choppers?

Nigella Lawson: showed the world that an ogasm is so easy to fake. There is seriously no food so good that can make you moan like that.

ohhh yessss. arrgghhh ahhhhh!!
now this sauce is scrumptious!

Jamie Oliver: successfully gives you the illusion that cooking is super easy. Throw this in... look how beautiful it is. A dash of salt n' peppa, throw this in, pop this in the oven while you go and watch TV and viola! A meal for my 200 friends who comes over to visit.

me jamie. see me kook!

You need to know the basics. Somethings you just can't do. The major mistakes of cooking, obvious to some, mystery to many.

Then there is creativity. You need to see what you've got and improvise. Added too much water? Flour differs from recipe? omg what to do?!

*slap*

Get a grip. Don't freak out.

Which brings us to the 3rd and final point. Courage to start cooking. Some people just dare not cook. Have you seen jamie oliver, that buck tooth brute, cook? He just anyhow throw things in.

The other day, i cooked this for shuyi.

rice + tumeric + cummin seeds + garlic + butter + lemon + bacon = butter/lemon rice

Just cook it like you would do for a paella.

Good maths

While waiting for shuyi one morning at T2, I decided to have a cuppa at Tosto. So get this. The americana cost $5.20. When I was served the coffee at my table, the helpful lady asked

'do you want a sandwich to go with that?'

Now, $5.20 is plenty expensive for a simple cup of coffee already. I try to refrain from buying expensive coffee outside as I have my own espresso maker at home and a cup works out to be around 60 cents. So I refused. But the lady dropped the killa proposal.

'we're on offer. coffee + sandwich = $5'

Man! That is some trippy math. Load me up with sandwich lady! No wonder she looked so confident that I'll have some sandwich.

americana + egg mayo sandwich

MOS burger

Don't you hate it when you open the milk caps and they ALWAYS spit 1 drop of milk on your hand?

spitting milk caps

shuyi eats with the grace of a monkey

she loves her burger

the lil vest is cute no?
