We finally found the occasion to go to 大上海. Shuyi have always wanted to do our wedding banquet there as she loves the decor and the Shanghai live music there. But alas, the place is so small we could never fit everyone.
The food was good and the 10% service/entertainment charge was well worth it. We stayed for around 3 hours. Nice ambiance, good food, relaxing entertainment, great company... makes for a fantastic evening.
The place
they got these 2 blade fans(not in picture) that is spinning idly at this nonsense pace. not useful but certainly added a nice relaxing touch to the place. Green Chinese lanterns, soft incandescent yellow light, huge cabaret style sofas... they all add up to one hell of a theme.
The singer and the 3 piece jazz band is the main draw. There were 2 singers that night. Both good in their own way.
The food
soaked peanuts in sweet soy sauce with chopped dried chili produced surprisingly good effect
frozen pork jelly: terrific if you love porky taste and you're not afraid to down pig fats. yum
prawn fried with salted egg yoke: kimochii
note: number of folds undefined. lose to 鼎泰豐
fried pig knuckles. you don't wanna get punched by this pig
we also ordered stir fried chinese 年糕 and 锅贴。Too busy eating to take pictures.
The company
we talked a lot of shit while shuyi snapped away
some camera crew was there
so was Sun Ho.
even the menu smells good
we got on stage for a pic
my ah peh cufflinks glittered brilliantly in the soft glow of the restaurant
we love em green lanterns
'oh? what's this? a wedding?'

we went to check out their ballroom
